Born on January 26, 1962 passed on May 16, 2013, Desiree Salas Santillan was beloved mother, daughter and friend. Desiree is survived by her husband Ernesto; two sons Jesus and Eddie; two daughters Desiree E. and Selena; brother Danny; seven sisters Susan, Pasty, Debbie, Cathy, Bonnie, Diana and Denise.

Services will be held on Thursday, June 13, 2013, 10:00 a.m. at San Fernando Mission Cemetery.

Austin Martin, Tribal Senator

Born on March 26, 1984 passed on March 10, 2013. Tribal Senator Austin Martin was a Redlands native and graduate of Redlands East Valley High School, he lived in San Diego and worked as a Pharmacy Technician. Austin a California Native American descendent of the Tataviam, Fernandeno, and Chumash ancestry and a Tribal Senator of the Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians.

Senator Martin is survived by his mother Cheryl Martin of Redlands, CA; father Herman Martin of Bristol, R.I. sister Ashley Diaz of Redlands; brother Aaron Martin of Redlands; sister Aftayn Martin of Bristol, RI; brother-in-law Daniel Diaz of Redlands; paternal grandparents Herman and Angie Martin of Bristol, RI; maternal grandparents James & Beverly Folkes of Thousand Oaks, CA, and Ray & Dori Guzman of Tucson, Arizona; along with many loving aunts, uncles, cousins; and 6 nephews Dayne, D.J., Roman, Gabriel; his godchild Seth Austin Diaz; and Chancelar who joins him in heaven. “AHO” God be with you.

Viewing will be at Cortner Chapel, 221 Brookside Ave, Redlands, CA 92373 on Thursday, March 14 from 5-8. Graveside services Friday, March 15 at 11 am at Hillside Memorial Park, 1540 Alessandro Rd, Redlands, CA 92373.

Russell E. Salas passed away March 8th, he is survived by his mother Sarah Martha Salas; four sons, Richard, Vincent “Vinny”, Raymond and Gilbert; two daughters Crystal and Pricilla; two brothers William and Danny; five sisters Susie, Pasty, Debbie, Cathy and Bonnie, and three half-sisters Desiree, Diana and Denise.

Services will be held Monday, March 21, 2011 at Funerarias Del Angel J.T. Oswald, 1001 N Maclay Ave San Fernando, CA 91340.

He was loved by many, had a great sense of humor and will be missed by those who loved him.

Passing of Tribal Elder Gilbert (Poyito) Joseph Guzman, Sr.

Gilbert (Poyito) Joseph Guzman, Sr., age 72, proud member of the Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians, and served on the Elder’s Council, went home to be with Our Lord and his beautiful wife. Passed away on Tuesday, February 15, 2011, after a short illness at home in Sylmar. He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Teresa Guzman, who passed in October 2010. Two Hearts beating as one again.

Gilbert was born and raised in San Fernando is survived by his son, Gilbert Guzman Jr., Daughters, Kathy Ann, Lisa Ann and Deborah Marie, Brothers, Richard Molina and Edward Sierra; Sisters, Angie “Chiquita” Campero and Betty Jean Johnson; 12 Grandchildren, 12 Great Grandchildren; Papa loved his children and absolutely adored his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Gilbert worked hard for many years as a Laborer for Local 300. He had a passion for deep sea fishing. His pass time was hanging out in his “Man Cave” watching his sports “Dodgers” and ‚”Lakers” His daughters are so ever thankful that they were able to share their last dances with their Father on New Years. He danced the night away, as he embraced the Love of his life through every dance by lifting his arms to the heavens above. His every wish was granted to the very last minute, until he took his last breath. Rest in peace our wonderful “Father”, no one can ever replace you. You made us all feel so special and you loved us all unconditionally. We will forever hold that in our hearts. Until we meet again. Love Your Children.

The viewing will be held on Saturday, February 19, 2011, 11am at Utter McKinley Funeral home in Mission Hills, CA. Church services at 1pm and burial to follow at 2pm at San Fernando Mission cemetery. The celebration of his life will be at 4pm at The American Legion in San Fernando, CA.

Passing of Tribal Elder Shirley Traba

Catherine Shirley Newman Traba, a Fernandeño Tataviam Tribal Elder, passed away on Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at the age of 81. Shirley will be missed by all her family, friends, and tribal members. The funeral services will take place Monday, May 17, 2010 at the San Fernando Mission Cemetery located at 11160 Stranwood Avenue in Mission Hills, business telephone 818-361-7387.
