The Corpsember implements the mission of the Tiuvac’a’ai’ Tribal Conservation Corps by utilizing the opportunity given to him/her to develop technical and personal skills through educational and work program, which enable him/her to advance his/her personal and career opportunities. In doing so, a corpsmember creates strong ties with his/her community through community involvement and service; explores avenues for personal growth and development in a respectful and nurturing environment and develop leadership skills to contribute to the advancement of all people.

ORGANIZATION SUMMARY

The Tiuvac’a’ai’ Tribal Conservation Corps (TTCC) is a non-profit organization established in 2022. An entity of the Fernandeno Tataviam Band of Mission Indians.

MISSION

The TTCC is a multi-beneficial hands-on-training program that will work with Native youth and young adults towards the goals of regaining ecological functionality, enhancing climate resiliency, and human well-being.

OUR VISION

Is to work towards promoting and restoring the cultural values of the Indigenous People through the practice and application of Traditional Ecological Knowledge in the protection, restoration, and development of our cultural and natural landscapes. We teach our youth to embrace their ancestral knowledge, which will promote their sense of identity, self-esteem, and self-worth. 

Essential Responsibilities

  • Propagate, fertilize, hand-water, and maintain native trees in the Tribal tree nursery
  • Assess plants for disease, insects, and weeds to protect the health of nursery trees
  • Load native trees and appropriate tools onto vehicles
  • Plant native trees on private parcels, primarily residential lots and engage with the community to answer their questions about proper tree care
  • Assist with driving to tree planting locations and vehicle upkeep (ensure vehicles are in safe driving conditions and immediately report any issues)

Qualifications

The following list details preferred qualities of a Corpsmember.

  • Ages 18-26
  • Punctual
  • Detail oriented
  • The ability to work well independently or in teams
  • Knowledge or familiarity of Southern California native trees
  • Previous experience with seed propagation, tree cultivation, and community engagement is preferred.
  • Proficiency using tools appropriate for nursery or tree planting work
  • Ability to carry trees in 3-15 gallon pots
  • Passion for place-based climate justice advocacy and local community development.
  • Flexibility to adjust work schedule to work earlier/later hours and/or weekends to accommodate project needs
  • Educational background from an accredited institution in botany/horticulture, forestry, plant science, soil science, pest management, ecology, or a related field, OR, the desire to pursue a related career is preferred.
  • Experience in or passion for working with a CA Native Tribe or Tribally-affiliated organization
  • California Class C Driver’s License, validation of driving record for policy insurability per the requirements of the state of California (not required, but highly desirable)
  • Use of navigation tools via paper maps and/or GPS to locate a site

 

Work Environment

This position operates in multiple environment settings including an outdoor, office environment, or remotely from the employee’s home. While in the outdoor environment, employees may have continued exposure to sun, wind, insects, and uneven landscapes.
