Tataviam flag’s most prominent image is the Grizzly bear “Hunar” in the tribe’s language that represents recent and past leaders of the tribe in the center of the Sun “Tamit”. The phrase underneath the bear “U.S. Federal 1892”, refers to the year the United States acknowledged the Tribe under the Mission Indian Relief Act of 1891. Three bars center top resemble the top design of traditional baskets, the center bottom three bars represents the three ancestral families of the tribe. Outer triangular design indicates both mountains and villages of the tribal territory and 24 locations that tribal citizens descend from.
