BACKGROUND: The Climate Ambassador works within the Environmental Protection Division (EDP) of the Tribal Historic and Cultural Preservation Department (THCPD) to ensure the preservation, protection, and management of the natural environment and homelands of the Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians (FTBMI). Under the direct supervision of the Division Manager and in collaboration with the project team, the Climate Ambassador will be responsible for the deployment and coordination of programs related to community outreach and engagement. Climate Ambassadors interact with residents in the FTBMI territory, providing information about climate-related services and programs, answering questions, resolving issues, and building relationships that help strengthen our communities.

JOB TITLE: CLIMATE AMBASSADOR
JOB TYPE: Part Time, 26 – 28 hours per week (Weekend & evening hours required)
COMPENSATION: $20 Hour, approximately $30,693 annually
REPORTS TO: Environmental Protection Division Manager
ANTICIPATED HIRE DATE: November 2024
DUTIES: Climate Ambassadors are responsible for promoting civic engagement and encouraging residents to get involved in their community. This will include door to door canvassing and hosting events or workshops related to climate resiliency, public health, and youth development. Climate Ambassadors typically have a wide range of responsibilities, which can include:
Outreach & Engagement
- Provide information about climate resiliency activities and programs to members of the community through door-to-door canvassing.
- Promote community involvement in climate resiliency programs and initiatives such as tree planting, clean-ups, cool paving, and heat adaptation.
- Participate in community events such as parades, festivals, and other public gatherings.
- Participate in and lead training programs to educate citizens on topics related to climate resiliency, such as extreme heat and tree planting.
- Distribute educational materials such as brochures, pamphlets, and topic-specific “giveaways” such as water bottles, magnets, and other climate resiliency-themed objects.
- Encourage participation in local watershed conservation projects such as stream cleanups, health fairs, or tree planting days.
- Promote climate resiliency awareness through outreach activities such as presentations at schools or community events.
- Represent FTBMI’s vision, work, and values in meetings with other organizations and agencies, as appropriate.
- Develop and deploy outreach and engagement strategies for FTBMI projects and programs that amplify Tribal community perspectives
- Provide support to partners and team to ensure timely completion of project goals, milestones, and deliverables.
- Facilitate effective communications with FTBMI and non-FTBMI community members, teams, and partners.
Administrative Functions
- Provide logistical support, prepare meeting minutes, and assist with the development of materials for meetings, events, conferences, consultations, and presentations.
- Provide support with developing reports and training materials.
- Support quantitative and qualitative research across a range of environmental and climate issues/projects.
- Schedule meetings and workshops, coordinating between multiple project partners and FTBMI staff.
- Assist with social media and public outreach with attention to / respect for diverse backgrounds.
- Ensure compliance with internal processes, protocols, and policies, as well as external requirements.

- A history of effective outreach to community members
- Experience presenting at workshops and community meetings
- Ability to work independently, handle multiple priorities, and meet tight timelines
- Demonstrated ability to learn and comprehend project goals and priorities, exercise sound judgment, and acclimate to adaptive project management needs.
- Ability to work under pressure
- Solid conflict resolution skills
- Ability to interact collaboratively and be team-oriented
- Intermediate or advanced MS Office software skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Excel (or other spreadsheet software) and Microsoft Power Point.
- Ability to remain flexible and adapt to multiple processes that are prone to change
- Must have a valid CA Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record as determined by the Tribe’s insurance carrier, and proof of insurance
- Must be dependable, punctual, self-directed, willing to take initiative, detail-oriented, and courteous and personable when dealing with the public.
- Must have access to reliable Wi-Fi and be able to use online meeting platforms such as Zoom and Teams when working remotely.
- Must have the skills necessary to use software to track engagement with the public and other relevant information as may be required for reporting purposes.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in water management, native plants, urban planning and/ or nature-based infrastructure
- Multi-lingual skills, preferably Spanish, and multi-cultural experience
- Some knowledge of the culture and history of the Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: Duties are performed primarily in the field, but also in the office. Travel is required to various locations in the region for meetings, conferences, speaking engagements, and site visits. Travel costs required for the job will be reimbursed at no more than the approved mileage rate. Evening and weekend work are required. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. - Fieldwork in specified underserved communities is required and subject to the environmental conditions of the season
- Must be able to walk several miles a day
- The work requires that the Climate Ambassador reside locally and be in the office regularly.
- Ability to work in a standard office setting, with considerable sitting and viewing of monitor.
- Requires reaching continually throughout the workday (mouse, keyboard, and telephone).
- May include lifting thirty pounds on an infrequent basis. Proper lifting techniques are required.
- Must use a personal cell phone for communications with supervisors and colleagues
CONFIDENTIALITY
This position develops, maintains, and is responsible for safeguarding the computer/electronic and hardcopy file folders containing sensitive and proprietary information about FTBMI and its members. If hired, the applicant will be required to sign a confidentiality agreement. The applicant must maintain confidentiality of all work and files pertaining to enrollment, clients, survey results, and all other material that may identify individuals by name (either directly or by reference), as set forth by FTBMI. Any violation in this matter may result in immediate termination of employment.
