San Fernando Valley, CA – December 13, 2013 – Katherine Diane Sarenana, 73, a member of the Fernandeno Tataviam Band of Mission Indians and beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother passed away on Monday, December 9, at Providence Holy Cross hospital in Mission Hills. Sarenana was born in North Hollywood on November 30, 1940. She lived her entire life in the San Fernando Valley. She was the daughter of Rita Rivera, an elder of the Tataviam tribe whose ancestors helped build the San Fernando Mission. The tribe traces its history to the Valley’s region, which the Spanish settled in the 1700s.
She is survived by her husband Jesus; brothers, Joe, Ray, Jack, Andy, six children Priscilla, Frank, Richard, William, Koila, Christopher, 17 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Family, friends and fellow members of the Fernandeno Tataviam Band of Mission Indians will pay tribute at 10:45 AM Tuesday, Dec. 17, at Mission Hills Catholic Mortuary, 11160 Stranwood Ave., Mission Hills – which sits on the land built by her ancestors.
